Due to the increase in the number of non-Japanese residents as well as the growth in the number of expatriate families, the number of preschools providing instruction in languages other than Japanese has been increasing steadily from year to year in the Tokyo area.
Although usually bundled into one large category, there are actually two distinct types of international schools. Schools such as the American School in Japan and the British School in Tokyo provide a curriculum based on the educational standard and system of the respective home country whereas some schools provide their own original curriculum.
Popular international schools always have many applicants and enrolling in or transfering to popular international schools may be difficult especially during regular moving seasons. It is always best to file applications early.
