Dear Okubo-san,
We are back in in our home country now and in the days and weeks to come we will have to get used to looking back to our stay in Japan in retrospect as a very important part of our life. As we had told you I guess a number of times, Japan was a unique experience for us, which can hardly be repeated, but since our memories on this will hardly weaken over time, it will stay in our minds.
Memories are regularly coined by experiences made and by people. And it was people like you, who have made all the difference in our Expat life. What had started as a pure business relation, ultimately mutated into a sincere friendship. Experiences like this are rare and we regard it as a privilege that you have shown so much personal empathy and care to us and to our well-being. For this we cannot thank you enough and we will treasure this in our minds for many years to come.
During our stay we have learned how pleasant, and thus important it is, to treat others like you want to be treated yourself - with a great deal of respect, courtesy and obligingness. These character traits will surely also be embraced byour child, who is still at an age, where such a behaviour is not just simply copied, but where this can still become deeply rooted in her character and personality.
Your very obliging and courteous lift to the our hotel on our final night was a big help for us after two stressful days of packing and moving. We had a nice room there with a fantastic view over Tokyo Bay and at the Tokyo skyline. Especially after dark the view was spectacular. Our following day at Tokyo Disneyland was really outstanding. Our childfs best friend from school and her mother showed up as surprise guest and whilst the day was long and tiring, these memories will be important especially for our child, who could enjoy her last day to the full!
Now the phase of re-integration will start and in basically every day-to-day situation we will be tempted to compare life in our home country with that in Japan. In most of the cases we will look back with an element of melancholy. However, we take a great comfort in the fact, that we will return to that country (Japan), which gave us so much, for visits. This will allow us to meet our endearing friends, whom we left behind, and therefore our farewell was only a temporary one!
Okubo-san, you are a special person and whilst you may experience occasional fights with your child during the adolescence period, your child will be very proud of you, since you as a role model and shining example, what philanthropy means in a practical sense. This is more than your child can learn in any school. Only life (and in this case, parent) can teach this.
Let's stay in a regular contact, Okubo-san, from both sides, which will help all of us to keep our pleasant memories alive. Please continue to enjoy life, have much success in your job and lots of fun with your child observing as your child finds the own way.
In Germany we say 'Tschus', which is used among friends, who will meet again!

Dear Mike,
I just wanted to let you know that my move went well and I love the apartment. When I sit on my couch in the evening with the curtains still open I cannot see any lighted windows of other apartments - I see all the trees that act as a scene. It was also just a 15 minute walk to work this morning, which is how long it too to get to the station in Harajuku.
Over all, it is exactly what I hoped for so thank you!

I've just completed a search for new housing in Tokyo. I worked with Takako Niiyama at Plaza Homes.
She is excellent -- we found something dog friendly, nice / modern and in our budget in about 3 days (which is unheard of).
You may want to consider contacting her.
She:
- Gets Western design / sense of style
- Is willing to be pushy / aggressive in negotiating
- Okay with saying "hi" and "bye" to things that don't work vs. taking you on all day tours of properties you don't like
Please keep her in mind for others that may need help finding
housing in the future. The best agent I have worked with in Japan.

Dear Plaza Homes,
I would like to express my deepest gratitude to Plaza Homes for the excellent work done for my family over the past few weeks. This is my fourth relocation process but this was supposed to be the most difficult one. Moving from Paris to Japan is in theory much more difficult than going from London to the US as it is not the kind of relocation one sees every day. The whole process has been very smooth, very transparent, always fair and very professional.
I cannot write a feedback email without also metioning the excellent job done by Shigeno-san. Among the three different rental agency contact that I have worked with, Shigeno-san was the only one who showed particular care for our needs/criteria. At the end of the process, I was hesitating between two apartments supported by two different rental companies. The service provided by Shigeno-san was a key input in my final choice simply because one prefers dealing with people he/she is comfortable with. It just shows once again that excellent service matters !
Last but not least, I would like to thank Richard for helping me and my family settling down in Tokyo. We have particularly appreciated his flexibility (such as coming on a short notice on a Saturday morning to help me set up my internet connection).
The only suggestion I would make is around customizing further the relocation package to the expat needs. For example, we would have been interested in more assistance towards purchasing a car, converting our driving license to a Japanese one or even finding a nanny. These services could have replaced the cultural training (not really useful as far as I can tell) for example.
Thanks so much to your team for their great job ! I wish everything was as smooth as dealing with Shigeno-san and Richard.

I advised at least two of my friends coming soon to contact Toshi-san and benefit from his assistance.

In March 2002, we began to look for a new residence in Tokyo. I wrote letters to three real estate companies outlining very specifically our criteria and hopes.
